Southlake Writers is a critique group designed to help you prepare for publication, or at least develop the skills necessary to improve your writing. Founded by Mary Andonian and moderated by Kelly Chang, the group meets on the first and third Monday of the month from 6:30PM-8:30PM. For more information, please go to Southlake’s website: www.southlakechurch.com
Southlake Writing Group Guidelines
Members are encouraged to pursue any type of writing they see fit. This includes, but is not limited to: memoir, personal testimonials, screenplays, teleplays, non-fiction how-to’s, fiction (all genres except sexually explicit or graphically violent), daily devotionals, and poetry. We’ll help get you ready for publication, or just encourage you in the writing process.
Members take turns reading their work aloud, and then receive on-the-spot feedback. Please bring three copies of formatted work to hand out. (Format: 12 pt. Times-New Roman or Courier, double-spaced, with one inch margins.) Page limit: 3-5 pages.
We critique the writing, not the writer. We’ll tell you what works, what’s good. If something takes us out of the writing, we’ll say so. Upon completion, we provide you with edits and notes.
We’ll calculate critique time based on length of meeting and numbers in the group, allowing for hellos and transitions. If our group is larger, we may want to divide critiques every two weeks.
Socializing: Beyond the very reasonable, during our meeting time we won’t socialize too much. We’re here to improve our writing. Let’s get to know each other before and after the meeting.
Confidentiality. We won’t steal ideas or talk about our work to others (except in general terms).
